Doctor David MacLennon sat down on the hospital bed and looked at the woman's mutilated face.
First he saw the pretty side - the side that had not been marred by the accident, the side that could have posed for a beauty ad.
Then his surgeon's fingers touched the other side - the side that could belong only to a gargoyle. The woman flinched under his gaze and David looked into both her eyes.
And that was when it began - when he started seeing his beloved Karen in the person of the scarred patient who faced him with questioning, pleading eyes.
"Yes, I'll take the case," he said. "I'll make this face beautiful again."
Those were the words David MacLennon spoke, but what he thought was: Yes, I'll fix her up - I'll bring Karen back from the dead!
