Child of Death....
Monuments stood in the centre of the woodland grove. We were in the grave-yard of the de la Talles.
"Here's my mother," Genevieve said, pointing to a little marble house. "All the de la Talles come here when they die." Something prompted me to say, "Does your father often come?"
"Oh, he wouldn't want to be with her," she said contemptuously. "You can't understand, you've only just come. I know he didn't want her -- that was why he murdered her."
Among the bones of the long-dead de la Talles the scene was macabre, fantastic; I had to get away from the chateau . . . yet a stronger instinct bade me stay and discover the fascination that the strange French household held for me .. .
