David Fein, owner of a slaughterhouse in a grim little town in Southern California, is a compulsive gambler. Lately gambling has taken over his life. First he couldn't cover his losses at the plant. Then he took a quick loan and went into debt. Now he hasn't come home for four days, and his wife is frantic. When Jacob Asch hears the whole sad story, he figures that Fein is probably sleeping off a four-day drunk in a flophouse. Asch agrees to look for him.
