A student at the end of the 19th century rents rooms in a old deserted house. He soon finds that he is not alone.
Stoker's story draws heavily on old West Country folk-lore surrounding the evil Judge Jeffreys and the Bloody Assizes of the late 17th century. An section on the historical context been added to explain the bloody historical background to the tale. A portrait of the infamous Judge Jeffreys is also included.
