Set in New York City in the 1940s, after the war. Sue and her family are excited about moving into a new apartment but as the daughter of a building superintendent, she unexpectedly has to cope with class prejudice from the snobby girls at school.
“It's so awful!” Sue's sister says. “Everyone will point to us and call us the janitor's kids.”
Sue can't believe it. “What if Pop is the janitor and takes care of the apartment house? Surely no one is going to look down at us because of the work Pop does?”
No one?
As soon as Rosalie Duke moves into apartment 7C, the trouble begins.
Then for the first time in her life, Sue feels lonesome and left out.
