Maddy O'Reilly's parents are dead and she has no family except an aunt in England. Maddy, from Cork Ireland, accepts her aunt's offer of a roof over her head and moves to England.

But she soon realizes she is unable to understand or accept English etiquette. After a short time, she finds herself in trouble after insulting some gentlemen at a ball, and things go from bad to worse.

Believing all Englishmen to be less than masculine, her opinion changes when she meets Charles. The problem is, Charles is a hot head, a drinker and fighter.
