The breakup of her marriage was made worse for Laura by the discovery that she was expecting a child. She succeeded in providing a home for her son, Nicky, but then Richard Mallory came back into her life to play havoc. Laura was forced to watch with dismay the bond which quickly formed between Richard and Nicky. Even more disturbing was the discovery that the bond between Richard and herself had not been entirely severed after all.
