The Ghost and Ms. Demure — Marian Jones

Romance blooms for Janis Carter, a disillusioned divorcee when rakish ex-Civil War Major Benjamin Blair materializes at a seance in order to prevent her murder by a descendant of his own assassin. The Major doesn't believe in love. Janis not only doesn't believe in ghosts, she is prim, proper, and appalled at the Major's womanizing ways.

Major Ben Blair is only solid from dusk to dawn. His less than omniscient powers at crime-solving frustrate Janis, as much as his susceptibility to San Diego's Old Town female tourists. Ben cannot rest until the last descendant of his own murderer -- the same killer stalking Janis -- is in his grave. Janis might end as a wraith, but not with the Major, who would then have to deal with the complications of his own ghostly curse.

If Ben prevents her murder, he disappears from her life forever. If Janis is the murderer's victim, Ben is cursed to remain tied to the Heritage Homes compound and never see his Ms. Demure again.
