When Marguerite Smith visited the local Indian Cemetery, she didn't expect to find a funeral already in progress. And the mourners didn't expect to find a second dead body already lying in the freshly dug grave.
The unexpected corpse turns out to be Ethan Quade, a member of the local Mashpee Wampanoag tribe who had gone to the big city and made good. But Ethan hade also made some enemies along the way. His wealthy father-in-law holds him responsible for the tragic accidental death of Joy, Ethan's beautiful, but self-destructive wife. Ethan's old girlfriend, Anna Pochet, still carries a grudge, as does Louis Perry, Anna's unstable former husband. Even one of the investigating officers, Detective Sergeant Lloyd Odoms, had a personal interest in the case -- years ago, he and the dead man were both in love with Anna.
