The Dragon of Mith - Honour Book (Runner Up) - Australian Children's Book of the Year Awards.
Without warning a dragon arrives in the town of Mith. He's big. He's got claws and scales! Everyone takes fright and runs for their lives. Everyone except a young turkey herder, Miss Krissy. ‘Why,' she wonders, ‘has a dragon come to their town?' ‘To eat us, of course!' the other citizens cry. But Krissy isn't so sure.
Little by little she discovers some truly amazing things about this dragon, including the fact that he's come to see the dragon slayer. ‘Not to get slain, I hope?' she asks.
Krissy tries to discover who this dragon slayer is. And at the same time, has to convince the people of Mith not to harm the dragon! Alas, like most towns, Mith has a lot of people with dark secrets they don't want others to find out.
Plots are hatched. Krissy watches as the town bully and the town butcher join forces against the dragon. And being old and sleepy, the dragon isn't always on his guard. As things turn out, the dragon has secrets of his own, deeper and darker than anyone could suppose. Secrets that rock the citizens of Mith to their core and change lives forever.
This book has its villains, wicked deeds and nail-biting moments, but at heart it's a tender tale in which understanding and good manners triumph. And a whole of lot silliness is revealed.
