Helen's first meeting with Hugh Rainer is spoiled by their antagonism over the right of way on the narrow lane along which they are both driving. She does not meet him again until his mother is admitted as a patient to the village hospital where Helen is employed in the X-ray department.
A recent widow, Helen experiences difficulties in sorting out her feelings for the obviously smitten Hugh who begins pursuing her relentlessly. She finds herself seeking the safe companionship of the village doctor in an attempt to avoid her state of emotional turmoil.
It is only when her mother-in-law springs an unpleasant surprise on Helen that she is forced to confront her memories and to come to terms with the decision that her doubting heart has prevented her from making.
