For the Honor of Your Country
It's a great honor to captain the U.S. Davis Cup team, even a team as disorganized as the one Brad Smith's just been handed, where the players' personal problems are bigger than their lobs. But not only does Brad have to forge these men into a team and prepare them for high-stakes international competition, he must, thanks to a CIA request, spy on the Venezuelan sponsors of the Davis Cup matches. Controlling that nation's oil industry isn't enough -- these men are playing politics, and endangering the U.S.-backed Venezuelan government.
Happily, Brad's old lover, Linda, is a local CIA operative, and their romance is quickly rekindled ... only to be cut off abruptly when Linda is kidnapped by anti-Soto guerrillas. Then Brad, too, falls prey to the revolutionaries as the military coup moves into high gear. The government is riddled with traitors, and bombs and rockets are flying everywhere. What can one ex-tennis champ and a lady spy do to stop a war?
