Annie Prior likes the good-natured look of Russell Brennan the first day he appears in her sixth grade class at Comstock Middle School. As their friendship develops, Annie learns that Russell's father has left him in the care of Gladys Blanchard, a woman of questionable repute, while he seeks employment and a new start in life elsewhere. Russell gamely struggles to make the best of his father's absence, but as the months go by, Annie sees the toll it is taking. Russell's situation turns threatening when Mrs. Blanchard's son starts showing up on week-ends for some secret activity in the garage. Hoping to bolster Russell's spirits, Annie suggests they investigate.
