After graduating from college Helen Bennett returned to Lazy Cloud, Michigan, to take her expected place in the scheme of things there. Everyone assumed that she would teach for a year and settle down with Frank Davis, with whom she had more or less been paired for ages.

But Helen felt tied down and discontent, and she knew that some of her restlessness resulted from meeting a relative newcomer to Lazy Cloud. Richard Falconer was finishing up his internship, and he understood about people doing things they didn't want to do. He tried to convince Helen that her "captivity" was only a state of mind; eventually, he said, she would come to like her work and her place in it.
