Elsbeth Thayer came to Avernus, the dark house on the raw seacoast, in answer to a repeated invitation from her old schoolfriend, Melisandra Aldrich. Both girls were orphans, and Lisandra found herself unwilling to return aloe to a bleak life under the watchful eye of her stepmother. So Elsbeth agreed to come for a visit and to stay and keep her company. But when the young girl arrived, there was no sign of Lisandra, there were only the stepmother and her sister, and three curious and terrifying female servants.
Elsbeth knew she should leave, but it was late, and miles to the nearest village; she accepted the invitation to stay the night…and found herself trapped in a household given over to the worship of all the was dark and evil! And even as she struggled to free herself from damnation, she knew that she was giving her friend up to the gates of Hell!
