The Bobbsey Twins can hardly wait to start their coming trip to the island country of dragon kites, volcanic mountains, and bright-colored lanterns -- Japan! They are all the more eager to go because of what their little Nisei friends, Jane and Jimmy Naga, have told them. There is a mystery about the disappearance of Jane and Jimmy's Uncle Kozo, who vanished on his way to America. The Bobbsey's think he may have returned to Japan and perhaps they will be able to locate him. Also a valuable goldfish bracelet belonging to a relative of Jane and Jimmy has been stolen from a museum in Kyoto, and the twins want to try to track down the thief.
When they reach Japan, they find it full of wonderful surprises. They visit the great Temple of Buddha, go to a “barefoot” school with Japanese twins, and are carried up a high mountain in baskets. Strangest of all, they find Japanese houses with paper walls -- Freddie falls through one -- and the people sleep on mats on the floor. The twin love not wearing shoes indoors, but Bert and Freddie rebel against wearing long Kimonos.
But even in this faraway country, the Bobbsey's prove themselves to be good little detectives and soon find clues to their two mysteries. Be sure to join them in their search for Uncle Kozo and the bracelet thief, and share their exciting and funny adventures.
