Left alone and defenceless after the Battle of Hastings, Lady Elfrida is shocked to find that King William has bestowed her hand in marriage on Alain de Ros, known as The Black Marquis. Convinced that the Marquis has wed her simply to produce an heir, Elfrida flees after the birth of their son and takes refuge in a convent.
