Reiley Frieze's life is based on the historical biography of Sigmund Markovich Rozenblum famously known as Lieutenant Sidney George Reilly â€" The British Secret Service Agent called the Ace of Spies and used by Ian Fleming to write the James Bond stories.
Sidney Reilly's aptitude for spying was enhanced by his fearless facade, and ability to use the latest technology---that is for the times around the early 1900s, and most importantly, his mastery of many languages. Historically, he preferred to engage his enemies socially, with wit, riddles, and humor. His incredible intelligence, flair for dialects, many masquerades, and his charismatic attractiveness kept the real Ace of Spies alive throughout many dangerous escapades for many years.
This story stays fairly close to these historical characterizations except that in the end, Reiley Frieze lives through his Russian imprisonment---the purported place of Sidney Reilly's demise, and is later killed in Ireland.
