Easygoing, direct, and reckless, Tex at fifteen likes everyone and everything, especially his horse, Negrito and Johnny Collins's blue-eyed sister, Jamie. Tex thinks life with his seventeen-year-old brother, Mason, in their ramshackle house would be just about perfect if only Mace would relax. He's always complaining about Pop, who hasn't been home in five months, worrying about paying the bills, and concentrating on getting a basketball scholarship so he can get out of Oklahoma.
