The letter addressed to Beth Caldwell from a firm of London solicitors was straightforward enough. It told her that her presence was requested in England for the disposition of her late grandfather's estate. Even though Beth had never known her grandfather, an apparently heartless man who had estraged himself from his only son, she was curious to see her father's boyhood home in Kent and was hopeful of learning the reason why her father had left Haddon Manor so abruptly.
