Susan in America — Jane Aiken Hodge

Susan Monckton is a shy, lonely English girl visiting pre-World War II Boston for a year of study at Radcliffe. Feeling vastly out of place with the wealthy family who is housing her and among her college peers (most of whom she finds insufferably brash and obnoxious), Susan finds solace in the one professor who seems to understand her. A secret passion quickly develops between the two, but their romance is stifled by his ties to a loveless marriage.
