Photographer Kissy Mellors is driving through the campus of a Maine college when a yellow Thunderbird swerves past her, hitting two female pedestrians. One life is ended. One life is suspended in a coma. Kissy's life is changed forever.

Shaken by the accident, Kissy is pulled into the lives of three men: James Houston, the drunken pre-med student who was at the wheel of the car; Mike Burke, the cop on the scene who becomes obsessed with her; and Junior Clootie, a local hockey star who draws Kissy into an intensely sexual affair.
