The end of the war brings unwelcome changes for Mary Snow. Her husband, Paul, announces his intention of returning to his acting career - but without the encumbrances of a wife and child. Returning to her home town with her daughter, Mary finds picking up the threads of her per-war life a challenge, which is not improved by the old antagonism between herself and her sister. Bringing up a child alone also has its problems. But Mary finds a job, and a new romance begins to blossom for her. Six-year-old Vivien shows a talent for the stage, inherited from her father, and life looks promising again. Then the past unexpectedly rears its head - with devastating consequences. Can Mary win through?
