Who is Sara Finn? Erasmus Thornton dares to hope that she is his daughter, born to the woman he loved (who was another man's wife) and who died during childbirth. He hires Adam Chapman to find her.
Sara doesn't know her real identity. She has vague memories from childhood, but which are true and which are false? She thinks her name is Serafina, but that was changed when, like a straw in the wind she was blown from pillar to post, ending up, at the age of eighteen, employed as a housekeeper to a man without sight.
The Honeyman sisters, Charlotte and Marianne, are divided on the matter. Rumours have always circulated about a half-sister being given away at birth. Charlotte is convinced the girl died. Marianne is just as convinced that she lived.
Adam Chapman follows the clues and tracks her down. He falls instantly in love, but even he can't prove the issue of her parentage. He wonders whether her family will accept her and arranges a meeting--where Charlotte--the most reluctant of the sisters, is the one who is able to conclusively prove the girl's identity.
