Bringing history to life through fantasy March 9, 2012

“This was a fun read. The characters are well developed and believable. The details of the trip and the accuracy of the historical facts gave me the impression this was almost a true story. I really loved the portrayal of Betsy Ross. The author made her out to be more than some woman with a needle and thread who happened to be in the right place at the right time to sew the first real American flag. His take on her was really interesting. This book was meant primarily for readers from 9 years old and up through mid-teens, but as a parent and grandparent I really enjoyed it.â€

“I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I love historical fiction and this book has a lot of history in it. I homeschool my kids, and getting kids interested in history can sometimes be a struggle. I'm excited about giving this book to my kids to read! I have no doubt that it will spark an interest in learning more about history. I can't wait to read the next book!â€
An amazing blend of history, fiction and life lessons August 22, 2012

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I really enjoyed the author's inclusion of life lessons a parent might share with their teenager as they interact with other teens. A couple of life lessons that stood out to me were "be nice to someone you might find annoying" and "sometimes you have to wait to get what you want." I found it intriguing to see who and what moments in history were included next in the book. The author helped me to visualize these as if I were there. He also helped me to reflect upon how our language and our dress have changed from colonial times. The tie to 4-H and how a teen grows through 4-H is not something you always have the opportunity to read about in a fictional book. In fact that part of the book seemed too real to be fictional. I look forward to the next book in the series!
