Acting was just a hobby to beautiful, violet-eyed Julie Cramer. When Rafe Macomber asked her to read for a part in his new TV series, Julie was flattered. But she was just as happy when her friend Nancy got the part. Julie's only regret was that she wouldn't be working with Rafe.
Little did violet-eyed Julie Cramer realize the time and energy involved in performing in plays on the weekend. Acting was just a hobby to Julie, who had minored in drama at U.C.L.A.; her major interest was in designing bags and belts for Vi's, and exclusive shop just off Hollywood Boulevard. But she was fast learning that the rehearsals and onstage performances at he Harris Playhouse were cutting into her social life, whish of late had dwindled to practically no one except Tom Connelly, the director for the playhouse.
And this particular evening's performance was an important one--especially to Nancy Hall, a soft-spoken girl who took acting very seriously. Rafe Macomber, a producer-director in television, was looking for new talent for his forthcoming series--and tonight he was checking out the Harris Playhouse. The dark-haired young Macomber was impressed both with Nancy and with Julie, and asked them to appear the next day for an audition at the studio.
After an odd mix-up in her directions, Julie arrived ten minutes late--something that was certain to pall Rafe Macomber's interest in her--and read badly. Nancy, to everyone's delight, won the job as stand-in to the lead actress, with a promise of something more substantial in the future, Julie was just as happy about lucking out, for she knew that an acting career was not her goal. Nor was her own role of stand-in, which to her dismay she found herself performing in a matter more important to her--romance
