A somber funeral for a fallen career cop, Cam Burns, retired and well-loved; he had been killed by a freak electrical accident -- or was it and accident?
The Jeffersonville Police Department mourns the loss of a colleague, especially Detective Sergeant Pat Grady, a close contemporary and Burns' best friend. Grady is skeptical and not convinced it had been an accident; he turns his eyes and his time and effort to proving it one way or the other.
Janet Fulcher, Pat's driver and assistant, develops a hesitant relationship with a young Pastor and part-time Police Chaplain, Al Crain. She has no church background, and his efforts to convert her to Christianity causes tension between them that may be too strong to be overcome.
While Grady and Janet pursue the case, he is attacked twice, once by electrical shock, proving to him that someone wants him out of the way because he keeps doggedly chasing the unknown killer. Shoe-leather detective work proceeds slowly and proves of little consequence. Time passes and the case cools......but not for long!
