Dark-haired Carol McCann had longed for a job at Cape Canaveral ever since she had learned of the Mighty Atlas project as a high-school freshman.
Perhaps it was because fragile Edith Allen was her exact opposite in looks that Carol was attracted to the blonde girl on the bus going to Cocoa, Carol had an appointment, but Edith was going to Canaveral cold. Teaming up with the New York girl might lesson Carol's own chances -- but it was a risk she was willing to take.
It all seemed amazingly simple, Carol got a job…and so did Edith. But living up to what Steve “Pix) Flanagan expected of Carol was something else again. Then there was that awful day when someone planted a “bomb” on Carol's desk and she failed to notice it. Could she be trusted with the very secret information that Test Conductor Flanagan, of the tawny eyes and close-cropped red hair, would have to confide in as secretary?
Carol's greenness would have been even more of a trial is she hadn't met Lieutenant Sam Hines from South Carolina. For Sam had both a sympathetic ear and broad shoulders to cry on.
