Slocum spotted the hermit along the way to Silver City, and he knows this “half human, half animal” mad man doesn't have a prayer against Mayerling's “deputies.” The hermit's wealthy wife is surely concealing something, but her greenbacks convince Slocum to save her husband from Mayerling's shooters. Still, the whole situation has Slocum wondering what the set-up is, even though the truth always comes out -- often in a blaze of gunfire…
