When Laura Easton returned to her home town, it was with the intention of putting the welfare of her motherless niece, Janey, before everything else. She was a trained nurse, and took a part-time job at Rivermead, a nearby convalescent home. Still hopelessly in love with Robert, her brother-in-law and Janey's father, Laura became friendly with two doctors living at Rivermead. Simon Brewster and John Harley both influenced her.
