DI John Hunter believes he has seen them all in his twenty years of investigation, but this one takes the biscuit. He is not confronted with the corpse of a senior Government minister every day, nor an alien. Here he has the two in one. Among the hate mail to the minister is one message that reads, "Death to all aliens", and with that epithet also written on the forehead of the corpse it seems that a genuine nutcase has done the dirty deed. With 'need-to-know' restricting his investigation, the Prime Minister suggesting a whitewash and the unwanted interference of the vindictive DCI Crann of Special Branch hampering him at every turn, John seems to be on a sure loser. Other men are murdered in similar fashion - men whose only connections to the minister is a shared interest in shooting and a tenuous link to two call girls. John learns of the Church of Pure Humanity, which, with its congregations of weirdos and criminals seems to hold the key to the mystery, with "Death to all aliens" one of its slogans, and in order to delve deeper into its aims and membership he enlists the aid of an old friend. They believe they are on the right track, but are stymied when John's wife, Jane, is abducted and the threat is made that she will be killed if he does not stop investigating. The abduction triggers an idea, and believing he has finally found out the truth he sets a trap for the killer. He finds he could not have been more wrong...
