In the present day, Nate Cutler is thirty, restless, and bored with his job, with his friends and with his life. He moves from Washington State to Massachusetts, looking for something but he doesn't know what. Maybe a shift in his surroundings will bring about a change in his feelings. In 1774 Massachusetts, communities are tearing apart. Gulfs deepen between Tories who support the king and Whigs who want more independence for the colonies. Lifelong friends turn against one another. Then in retaliation for the Tea Party, the king closes the port of Boston to all ships, shifting dislike and stubbornness into bitter hatred. And there is Grace Layton. A house with a mystery, a cave with an unusual combination of mineral veins, a few antique nails â€" and Nate Cutler stumbles into the biggest shift of all.
