Countess Alexandreya Razin finds her life in a turmoil when her mother dies and she discovers her tyrannous father has promised her hand in marriage to Prince Svendoff as payment of a heavy gambling debt.

She flees from Moscow to seek sanctuary with her aunt in Warsaw where she meets Major Simon de St. Yes, a spy for Napoleon. However she does not reveal to Simon that her father, Count Razin, is a double agents, and she is soon accused of treachery when Simon discovers it was her father who was responsible for his near death. Both Alexandreya and Simon have much to learn -- Alexandreya about her real father and family and Simon about her -- and have much to endure before they are free to find happiness.
