Time had no meaning. There was nothing in the world, nothing but the two of us, clinging together in breathless response to each other.
Finally Steven said, “You must leave Devil's Dunes, Paget.”
Suddenly I realized that he had been standing behind me, watching me all the time I had been on the shore. He had been there in the dark.
I demanded, “Did you see it, Steven? Do you know who it was?”
He shook his head. “See it? See who? There was no one. Nothing. I saw you throw yourself into the sea. That's all I saw.”
“Throw myself into the sea?” I repeated, my voice shrill with disbelief. “I was struck by a rock. I fell and couldn't get up.”
“I saw nothing,” he said slowly…
