Phoebe Vincent was thrilled when she was appointed district nurse to Rushford, the Devon village where she had spent all her life. It meant she could give up the somewhat spartan life of a hospital for home comforts in her parents' house, and that her patients would mostly be people who had known her since her childhood days. Of course, she realized, there could be drawbacks in such a situation - notably the good-natured gossip and speculation about her and her affairs which was bound to ensue, especially as she would be working with the good-looking bachelor Doctor Mellor! And gossip there was - nut unfortunately not all of it was good-natured.
