Northern Europe in the mid-19th century was desperate enough that four families willingly risked their lives to escape the disease and starvation they were experiencing. John Birgen is concerned with the predicaments, motivations, and conflicts that those before him endured to achieve a better quality of life. The Civil War took the life of a past relative who fought with Sherman; his mother witnessed John Dillinger robbing a local bank and the gun battle with the police. There are a few characters that were self-indulgent and dependent on others. The influence of generation to generation has unpredictable elements and predictable consequences to those preceding John Birgen, and also on him. The eventual interacting of family took place in South Dakota, and the romances and the conflicts that arise among them is a family saga that John makes entertaining. John relives the mid-20th century by exploring the social attitudes, music, and sexual behavior that molded their lives.
