As a purebred delver, Ryson Acumen instinctively senses changes in the land of Uton. The alterations, however, are not limited to the delver's realm. In the breeding grounds of Demonsheol, the lord of all demons has forged an altered existence, and the transformation threatens the very structure of power. Primevals once obedient to their master begin to consider schemes of rebellion. One demon taskmaster decides to break the bonds of enslavement and flees to Uton.

Turmoil does not end with the actions of a single demon. In Dark Spruce Forest, a seemingly innocent experiment turns into tragedy. The elf camp is thrown into chaos and the wizard Jure falls into a state of absolute despair. Unable to cope with the calamity, the wizard spirals downward into an abyss of self-destruction.

Learning of the demon's arrival, Ryson pursues the beast, but his task is delayed by the growing turmoil in the forest. The delver must help Jure, stabilize the elf camp, and deal with a renegade primeval. When Ryson finally faces the demon, he realizes that far more is at stake than any territorial claim. In hoping to save the land as well as his own conscience, he discovers the one possible answer is also a path to salvation.
