Dr. Fred Collier came to Seven Devils with the intention of bringing decent medical care to rural Arkansas. He converted the plantation house known as Twin Oaks into the closest thing Choctaw County had to a hospital. And it is there that he delivers babies, sets broken limbs, and tends to the sick with the help of Nurse Lally and a small household staff--until the day the stationmaster drops off an ailing soldier who mysteriously collapsed on the train. A soldier who brings to Twin Oaks not only a deadly disease, but a phantom child as well, one whose spectral laughter can be heard echoing through its halls.
