Maverick Wilder rode for two weeks to reach his friend, Jake, at his ranch before Jake passed away. When he arrived, Jake was adamant that Maverick marry his daughter, Montana, like he promised in his letter. Maverick always kept his word, but he didn't think Montana would marry him because he was older and she just wasn't ready to get married.
Montana fought against her pa's wishes. Maverick was older than her and she just couldn't see marrying him. Yet, when she was threatened by a hired hand, Maverick was there to protect her. When she was sick, Maverick took care of her while her pa was laid up with a busted leg, wrist, and ribs from breaking her stallion. The one thing that attracted her to Maverick was his sad brown eyes. They touched her heart more than she realized.
