Jennifer Altman grew up in the hills of Appalachia and had to struggle for everything she ever wanted in life. When she was eighteen and working in an office, she met a well-to-do young lawyer, Clay Deaver, who took a strong liking to her dark-haired good looks and obvious brains. Clay decided to enhance Jennifer's talent in dress merchandizing by helping her finance a boutique shop, and so Jennifer and Clay became partners in business. Clay had to settle for just this kind of partnership, for Jennifer did not share his romantic feelings.
Now, a few years later, Jennifer was happily building up her clientele in the shop on Foothill Boulevard, in the out-skirts of Pasadena. Business was thriving, and Jennifer knew the sweet taste of success after her long years of hardship. Her life seemed satisfying and full -- until David Wentworth entered her shop one day. David was from Texas, and his tall, rugged build and sandy-colored hair caused Jennifer's otherwise stoic nature to reverse itself dramatically. Suddenly she became vulnerable, yearning for love, hoping that her feelings for David were reciprocated.
It is into this chaotic -- for Jennifer -- atmosphere that Clay reappears, accompanied by his older sister, Melinda. And when Jennifer refuses Clay's proposal of marriage, he threatens to sell out and ruin the business, thereby destroying Jennifer, too…
