Quintus, a retired general, several years after losing an arm in a battle with the Picts is tasked with accompanying a king's daughter and her husband home to Ireland from eastern Britain. However, almost from the beginning fate intervenes and Quintus, unwittingly, finds himself involved with the characters and groups which will redraw the map of Western Europe. He meets St. Patrick (Padraig in the story), Niall of the Nine Hostages (ancestor of the High Kings of Ireland from 6th to 11th century), Count Constantinus (King Arthur's legendary father) and the ancestors of the Franks. The old soldier's erratic adventure takes him through the rapidly changing world of 5th century Europe. His actions will alter the course of events and have far reaching consequences. This is a sequel to Roman Sunset.
