Stella Pumfrey had fallen down the stairs and fractured her skull. From all appearances, she had interrupted a common burglar, caught her slipper on the carpeted landing, and fell to her death.
Inspector Roper immediately realizes the investigation has been bungled from the start. The trail, if there was one, has grown cold. The postmortem has offered a few anomalies. And Roper, with his keen insight, Quickly discerns murder.
The first doctor on the scene was the victim's brother-in-law, and relations between his wife, Stella's sister, were at best estranged. Throw in a troubled, even nasty, marriage, the odd clues left by the robber, and Roper discovers a tale as sordid as it is deadly.
