Lady Freya, goddess of love, wisdom and fertility of the old pre-Christian European folk religion, decides to overthrow Christianity and bring back the old gods, but is warned that the Christian God, here referred to as the "Ancient of Days," is too strong to be overcome by direct attack. Accordingly, she arranges to incarnate on Earth, in not one but a bevy of female bodies, in order to study AoD's hold over his human followers and seek out his weak points. Her mission proves to be complicated not just by the quirks of human social convention, sex and spirituality, but by the fact that her human incarnations are born as “blank slates,” with no knowledge of what her mission is, unless the gods who are trying to help her can find a way to communicate that knowledge to them from on high. Meanwhile, the highly exceptional stranded youngsters, possessed as they are of a kind of godlike charisma and superhuman cunning, find themselves brought together in this world as if by chance, to experience a summer vacation of truly rare and glamorous adventure.
