"You're impertinent." Pearl's voice was hot with anger. "What possible right have you to speak to me? Once I thought we must have met before. Why ---" Pearl broke off. She stood staring at Mary, her face slowly whitening. "Of course," she whispered. Why didn't I guess it before? I should have known. You're my twin sister, aren't you?" "Yes, I am your sister," Mary said. There was a pause. Suddenly Pearl laughed, a laugh of genuine pleasure. Mary thought her moods were as wild and unexpected as ever. "But darling," she hugged her sister. "You were such a plain little girl! I never thought you would grow up so pretty!"
