Uninvited, an old man sat at the table of Andrew Waldron one night during his vacation in Rome. As the old man sketched a portrait of the young American, he convinced him to go to Cologne for carnival time. From the moment Andrew arrived, small things began to go wrong. Beneath the surface of the gay, colorful city lay an indefinable threat.
Andrew found lodging in the exclusive Lindwurm castle, where a beautiful young woman, Bettina von Alten--whom he had met in Cologne--was also a guest. Bettina, with her cunning and her fears intrigues Andrew, and the more attractive she becomes to him, the more he wonders what her role is in the grotesque nightmare that is engulfing him.
