Meredith Pelfrey needs to escape. Her home is comfortable and she has all the material things a girl could ever want. What she doesn't have is supporting parents. The very thing a young woman needs is a mother to guide her and a father to help her learn how to choose a proper husband. Sadly, Meredith is on her own and she's sinking.

Her mother was beaten down by her overbearing father long ago. She retreated to survive. Her father is a pompous blowhard who belittles his daughters every chance he gets. All Meredith wants to do is get out. And so she does.

Calvin Becker is a school teacher. He loves his work and he's well respected for the excellent job he does in the community. He realizes that his life is missing something he wants. One day he wants a wife and a family, but those things don't come easily in Oak Brook, Kansas.

The single women in town aren't the sort that Calvin wants to marry. So, he gets creative and takes a risk. Meredith finds his ad in the many ads that she went through and decided that he's the one she'll take a chance on.

Will these two inexperienced people get past their nervousness and caution to finally start a romance? Will it take a devastating loss to help them bare their true selves to each other? Is love even a possibility for them or do they need to call it quits?
