Skye Tremayne, the American daughter of Primmy Tremayne, has always been fascinated by her family's turbulent history around the old Cornish clay works around St Austell. She takes a year's sabbatical from her work in USA as journalist to travel to Cornwall to meet her grandmother, Morwen Tremayne. She is drawn into the lives of her new relatives. But as she pieces together the past, larger events takes precedence. Then a young American soldier called Lewis Pascoe arrives in Cornwall looking for distant relatives - but the shock of his appearance is too much for Morwen.
