Nurse Valerie Alison had agreed to act as nurse to Mrs. Featherstone for her passage to Jamaica, where a position with the Good Heart Hospital at Montego Bay awaited her.

Also accompanying Mrs. Featherstone is the attentive Dirk Harden, Eileen Featherstone's fiance at the time of her tragic death in an accident, Dirk is long on family but short on cash, and Valerie strongly suspects that he is after Mrs. Featherstone's money.

To add to the mystery that seems to surround her hard-to-please patient, the ship's doctor is Bruce Harridan, whose romance with Eileen was broken up by the girl's mother because of his background. Though ill and in need of a doctor, Mrs. Featherstone steadfastly refuses to call on Bruce Harridan, whom she suspects of having designs on her life.

But when Mrs. Featherston dies unexpectedly on the day before the S.S. Caribbean reaches Jamaica, suspicion falls not on Bruce Harridan but on Dirk -- the chief beneficiary in her will.

Strongly attracted to both men -- and knowing that each could have had a motive for her patient's death -- Valerie finds the answer to the mystery and to her restlessness in the haunting beauty of Jamaica.
