In Richmond Hill, Queens, old porches creak in the heat and old ladies tend their gardens, while the breeze wafts Sicilian, Yiddish, Hindi and Spanish through the Homestead Deli, the el train and the green woods.

But crime doesn't stop at the East River, and when two children are brutally murdered in the woods, shock waves ricochet through the neighborhood and inside the home of the Breslinsky family -- Claire, a photographer back from jet-set Europe; Mary, her cozy battleship of an Irish mother; her father Stan, an opera-loving hardware store merchant; her sister Carmela, an uptowny fashion columnist; and Zinnie, a salty New York cop who lives with the Breslinskys, along with her precious four-year-old son Michaelaen.
