Spinster sisters Amanda and Lutie Beagle, having inherited a Manhattan detective agency from their late brother, look into the case of a headless corpse found in a theatrical lodging house in the reissue of Our First Murder (1940), by Torrey Chanslor, the pseudonym of children's book illustrator and Caldecott winner Marjorie Torrey. Their young niece, Marthy Meecham, narrates this quaint whodunit set at a time when the mean streets of New York weren't so mean.
